Raiders Take First Step!
Morris Early Bird Invitational. August 23rd, 2017
After a fast summer, the Raider Girls open their 2017 Cross Country Season unexpectedly on a warm afternoon in Morris, Illinois. Not knowing quite what to expect from a team that lost 3 of the Top 5 from the Varsity last year, the girls had something to prove. While it's always tought to run a "career best", 5 of our girls did exactly that on the first meet of the year! Cassidy Shirley, Mikayla Jacoby, Ali Salt, Danae Kay, and Shayan Malik all re-established their mark to beat in future races! Ania Gniatczyk, running in the first race of her career, set a Morris JV Course record of 21:33.2, which would have been good enough to be the Varsity Team's #3 runner. Ali Salt paved the way for Ania by setting the pace through the first 2 miles. I loved how the 2 of them worked as a team! Another highlight included freshman Kelly Anderson running an incredible first race to also claim a spot on the Varsity Top 7! Competition for those spots will heat up over the next several weeks. At the end of the meet, the girls were rewarded for their efforts by winning 1st place on JV and 2nd on Varsity. It was a true team effort that made it happen at both levels!
Next meet is Saturday at Harvest Fall Classic in Elgin!
